CAMP HURRICANE POINT, Ar Ramadi, Iraq (April 5, 2005) - Sergeant David J. Oconnell, machine gunner, Jump Platoon, Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, shakes hands with his battalion commander, Lt. Col. Eric M. Smith, after being awarded the Purple Heart during a ceremony in the conference room here. The 26-year-old from Salem, Conn., took shrapnel to the forehead from an improvised explosive devise blast.
