Our Mission

The mission of the 2d Marine Division (2dMarDiv) is to generate, train, and certify forces in order to conduct expeditionary operations in support of II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF) campaign objectives and crisis response tasking. On order, 2dMarDiv will plan and execute Division-level ground combat element operations as part of a Marine Air-Ground Task Force or Naval Expeditionary Force.

U.S. Marine Corps Pfc. Evan Luisi, a native Palmerton, Pa., and a rifleman with 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment (1/6), 2d Marine Division, lays his French Fourragere on the casket of Pfc. Glenn White, in Emporia, Kan., Sept. 18, 2021. White was in 1/6 when he was killed in action in Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, during World War II. “Being able to participate in the ceremony was an amazing opportunity; laying down my French Fourragere was a huge honor,” Luisi said. “My French Fourragere will be buried with him, to symbolize our brotherhood through 1/6. Something that I once wore will always be a part of his memory—that’s incredible, I’ll always remember that moment.”

The 5th and 6th Marine Regiments are the only units in the Marine Corps authorized to wear the French Fourragere. Every service member with the regiments wears the award on their left shoulder of select uniforms for as long as they remain a member of the unit. The two regiments were awarded the combat decoration after their participation in three significant battles during World War I: the Battle of Belleau Wood, Battle of Soissons, and the Battle of Champagne.
