Major Geoffrey T. Newton Commanding Officer, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion

Geoffrey T. Newton Enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in December 1993 and completed Recruit Training in the Spring of 1994. Following Recruit Training he attended and graduated from The School of Infantry and Marine Corps Security Forces School. He was then assigned to Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team (FAST) Company, 1st Platoon, where he participated in CONUS security deployments as well as O-CONUS counter narcotic and security deployments. 

Upon completion of his assignment to FAST Co he received orders to 1st MARDIV where he served as a Scout Sniper in support of Second Battalion, First Marines and 1st Reconnaissance Battalion. He participated in Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) deployments as well as CONUS Border Security and assistance operations along the U.S. southern border.

Following his tour with 1st Marines he was assigned to the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force – Reconnaissance, Surveillance, Target Acquisition (RSTA) Team, Quantico, Virginia. While assigned to RSTA he participated in several O-CONUS liaison deployments as well as extensive research and development in support of Reconnaissance and Surveillance. In 2001, SSgt Newton accepted assignment to the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program and executed orders to NROTC The Citadel, where he graduated in the spring of 2004.

After successfully completing all required entry level officer courses and schools, 2ndLt Newton, reported to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines (V36) for duty as a rifle platoon commander under (then) LtCol J. D. Alford. While assigned to V36 he completed combat deployments as a rifle platoon commander as well as one as an Iraqi Commando Brigade Advisor and Joint Terminal Attack Controller.

1stLt Newton executed orders to 2d Reconnaissance Battalion in the spring of 2007 and was immediately immersed in a pre-deployment training cycle for which he would command the sole Reconnaissance assets assigned to the MEU. While deployed he was promoted to Captain, and upon return, he would take over as the Battalion Operations Officer. After serving for 13 months as the Operations Officer he would take command of Alpha Company and deploy to Afghanistan. Immediately after returning CONUS he executed orders to the Maneuver Captains Career Course (MCCC), Ft. Benning, Georgia.

In 2011, following graduation from MCCC, he completed an additional company command deployment with 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines to Afghanistan.

Upon re-deployment to CONUS he assumed the duties and responsibilities as Officer in Charge of the Special Tactics Branch (STB), II MEF Special Operations Training Group (SOTG).

As the STB OIC he was responsible for the training and certification of all scout sniper and Reconnaissance assets assigned to MEU forces deploying worldwide. He was promoted to Major while serving with SOTG and received orders to report for Mid-Level school in 2015.

Major Newton executed orders to the USAF Command and Staff College and subsequently graduated in 2016 with a M.S. in Military studies. He was directed to report to 2d Reconnaissance Battalion thereafter.

In the summer of 2016 he took command of Force Reconnaissance Detachment, Maritime Raid Force, 24th MEU under Col. Ryan Rideout and deployed after completion of the MEU training continuum. Upon return from the MEU in October 2017 he assumed the billet of Battalion Executive Officer.

Major Newton currently has over 24 years of service in the Marine Corps and has deployed 12 times to date, the majority of which have been greater than 180 days and in support of combat operations. His succession to command of 2D Reconnaissance Battalion took place on 20180516.
