2d Marine Regiment Remains Ready with Line of Sight Radio Systems
Marines commanded by 2d Marine Regiment executed a Line of Sight Communications Exercise that focused on the readiness of the AN/MRC-142D multi-channel radio system and the Tactical Elevated Antenna Mast System (TEAMS) on Camp Lejeune, N.C., Feb. 17-19, 2021. Although the exercise was centered on both radio and antenna employment, the main focus was the development of teams at the sergeant and below level.

1st Battalion 2d Marines Concludes Unit Deployment Program 20.2
On Feb. 17, 2021, Marines and Sailors of 1st Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment (1/2), 2d Marine Division returned from a paradigm shifting deployment in the vast and exotic training areas of Japan. During a year marred by the effects of COVID-19, the battalion successfully deployed to Okinawa, Japan in the Fall of 2020, as part of the Unit Deployment Program (UDP).

In March of 2020, while attached to Marines with 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine regiment, 2d Marine Division (2d MarDiv) Hospitalman Gilbert Gonzalez, a native of La Palma, C.A., demonstrated his dedication and passion as a U.S. Navy corpsmen. It was on Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., where Gonzalez developed his reputation for being calm and collected while providing medical support during high intensity training. The corpsman was attentive and detail oriented while administering acute concussion evaluations to .Marines in the field.

U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Albert P. Gettings who served with Fox Company, 2d Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, is commemorated by Fox Company, 2d Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division at Camp Lejeune on Jan. 15, 2021. First Sgt. Adrian Munoz read Gettings’ Silver Star citation prior to a CrossFit workout known as the “Bert” Workout of the Day. Marines conducted the workout which consists of burpees, push-ups, lunges, squats, and running. During the workout, the Marines were constantly reminded to keep pushing through the pain and give their all “just as Cpl. Gettings did.”

In a time of mass foreclosures and setbacks, 2nd Marine Division’s drive to remain America’s force in readiness has not wavered. On December 12, 2020, Marines and Sailors of India Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment (V3/6), 2nd Marine Division (2d MARDIV) conducted a live-fire company battle course for the opening of range Golf-36 (G-36). G-36 is Camp Lejeune’s newest and most challenging range to date, and the first of it’s kind on the installation.

Making way for the future, 8th Marine Regiment joins other units in deactivation
For an evolving Marine Corps, a step forward means having fewer Marines and Sailors in the ranks, but a more effective strength to carry out the mission. The Corps faced several cuts last year, and the trend continues into 2021 as 8th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division (2d MARDIV), ends its most recent, 70-year, activation period with a deactivation ceremony on January 28.

Since the divestment of tank battalions in the United States Marine Corps – part of the Commandant’s Force Design 2030 initiative, designed to modernize for the next era, focus more heavily on naval expeditionary warfare and better align the ‘Corps with the National Defense Strategy (NDS), hundreds of tank Marines have been displaced from their jobs as tank mechanics, drivers, and related Military Occupational Specialties (MOSs). As a result, in the Marine Corps’ effort to ‘keep the faith’ with these dedicated warriors, tank Marines have been given the option to either change careers within the Marine Corps, switch to a different branch of the military (typically, one with tanks), or separate from service altogether.

A Battalion and the Croix de Guerre
Leaders from 6th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division (2d MARDIV) recently welcomed “The Beirut Battalion” to their ranks, as the Marines and Sailors of 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment (1st Bn., 8th Marines) were formally awarded the historic French Fourragere, also known as the Croix de Guerre, by 6th Marines at a ceremony aboard Camp Lejeune on November 25, 2020.
