MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Marines from Regimental Combat Team – 2 who recently returned home from Iraq met with one of North Carolina’s senators Feb. 23.
Cpl. Henry Sowell, a mortarman with 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, sat next to Richard Burr and spoke to him about many different topics while eating with many of his fellow Marines in a mess hall here.
“I was interested in talking to him and expressing some of my thoughts,” explained the Pittsboro, N.C. native. “I voted for him and wanted to let him know I supported him.”
Senator Burr arrived at the chow hall with many Marines and base officials. Burr supports the Marines and their mission, according to Sowell.
Burr, Sowell and the other Marines spoke for approximately one hour on topics such as the current situations Marines are in and the fight for freedom in the Global War on Terrorism.
“He is always looking out for the Marines,” explained the 2002 Northwood High School graduate. “I feel he honestly wants to make some changes that will help us and all the Marines out.”
As the lunch drew to a close, the Marines all thanked Burr for taking time to come and talk with them. Burr stood up and thanked all the Marines for what they have done for North Carolina and the United States.
