CAMP FALLUJAH, IRAQ -- With the heat growing more intense as the day went on, Lance Corporal Justin J. Buie, a Marion, S.C., native, and his Fire Team of Marines patrolled through an industrial area, searching warehouses for signs of insurgent activity. After having a rocket hit inside of their base a few days earlier, 2nd platoon of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment searched the compound to ensure the safety of the Marines here.“We are just making sure there are no weapons stored in the buildings,” Team Leader, Lance Cpl. Justin J. Buie, the team leader, explained.Moving to each building, the 2002 Marion High School graduate, along with his Marines, entered and cleared each room. They moved through each building making sure the spaces were thoroughly checked for weapons and insurgent propaganda. After having found a weapons cache a short distance down the road earlier this month, and the rocket attack on their base a few days earlier, Buie and the other Marines looked for anything linked to the incidents or any signs of possible future attacks.Making their way through more than 50 warehouse buildings, the fire team searched through boxes of stationary, bags of sugar and other foods, along with pallets of electrical supplies. They scoured every inch of the buildings to ensure no area was missed. “Where we searched was a perfect place from which to fire mortars at us. We wanted to make sure there weren’t any mortar systems set up here,” explained Buie.Once the search of the buildings was complete, Buie led his Marines to the homes inside of the compound. The locals waved and smiled happily to the Marines and were thankful for them making sure everything and everyone was safe.“Searching the area is another way we are helping to make sure there are no weapons caches or insurgent activity is going on in the area,” explained Buie. After clearing every building and home, they patrolled back to their base where they prepared for their next mission. The Marines were happy to find that their search discovered no weapons caches. For them, this is a sign of progress in their area. With another mission accomplished, they keep pushing forward in doing their jobs as they fight in the Global War on Terrorism and provide a safe, stable environment for the Iraqi people to prosper.
