MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Families and friends gathered to welcome home 5th Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, from Iraq here, Feb. 29.
The battalion performed several operations within the II Marine Expeditionary Force battlespace during their tour. One of the key operations was civil affairs, a mission that includes supporting the needs of the local Iraqi infrastructure.
“5/10 is the first artillery battalion to conduct civil affairs work in the Marine Corps during Operation Iraqi Freedom,” said Maj. Mike Landree, the battalion’s executive officer. “We had cooks, motor transportation Marines and artillery men
running (Civil Affairs Group) operations in every district in Al Anbar.”
Families and friends awaited the arrival of their loved ones. The battalion had food and drinks for the children.
“After waiting for 12 months, the couple of hours today seems like nothing,” said Lara Cariker, a friend of one Marine. “We’re really excited to see him.”
Cpl. Patrick W. Hatley, a squad leader, arrived to find his family and friends waiting to welcome him home. His family wanted to show as much support for him as possible.
“It was great to come back and have a huge banner waiting for me,” said Hatley. “It’s a great relief to be back. I’m looking forward to spending time with my family and my two friends that came here.”
The battalion’s commanding officer said his Marines did an incredible job.
“They did exceptionally well adapting to the new environment,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Mayette, the commanding officer of 5th Battalion, 10th Marines. “I want to congratulate my men and women on a very successful deployment. They worked extremely well in all three areas of operation and they did it with a great attitude.”
