MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C -- The audience up-roared into applause as the 2nd Marine Division Band stepped on stage at the Celebrate Columbus Day 2011 celebration in Bridgeport, Conn., from Oct. 7-9.
The performances were part of a three-day tour in which the band performed at Andrew Warde and Fairfield Ludlowe High School, the Klein Auditorium and the Columbus Day parade.
“This was a great experience for me especially because it was my first time performing in Bridgeport,” said Lance Cpl. Amimarie M. McClallen, flute player, 2nd MarDiv Band. “I had a really great time and hope I get the opportunity to return next year.”
The first two concerts were for high school students to hear the band perform and ask questions about the Marine Corps and the different career opportunities if they decided to join.
“It gives the students a chance to listen to us and explore their possibilities of joining the Marine Corps,” said Sgt. Joseph L. Maryanski, saxophone player, 2nd MarDiv Band.
The band then played two concerts in the Klein Auditorium and marched in the Columbus Day parade during their final day down the streets of Bridgeport before hundreds of excited spectators.
“The reaction that I saw from every crowd we performed in front of was extremely positive,” said GySgt. Andrew J. Cox, Drum Major, 2nd MarDiv Band. “Everyone I talked to sounded extremely ecstatic. Many of them had never seen a Marine Band perform, so a first impression is a lasting impression and overall I think they we’re very impressed.”
Along with the traditional music played by many Marine Corps bands, the band also featured its brass band which plays melodies such as “All of the Lights” by Kanye West featuring Rihanna and “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz which were big crowd favorites.
“The brass band shows people we have personality and a good sense of humor. It shows that as Marines we still know how to have fun,” said Cox. “The music they play doesn’t just entertain the younger generations; it’s for everybody and that’s why they always get a huge applause.”
Although the band is constantly striving for perfection and improvement, a job well done is still to be recognized by not only the cheering crowds before them but their leadership as well.
“I think overall the Marines performance was outstanding. I think they’re level of expertise is great,” said Cox. “There will always be room for improvement but as a whole I was impressed by the bands professionalism while in Bridgeport.”
