Ronald Smith, a native of Saint Marys, Ga., and a mortarman with the unit, as the battalion sergeant major reads Smith’s Bronze Star medal with combat distinguishing device citation aloud May 4. The ceremony was conducted at the conclusion of an 11-mile hike the battalion conducted to recognize Smith for treating a wounded Afghan soldier in the heat of combat in Helmand province, Afghanistan, last year.
