CAMP AR RAMADI, Ar Ramadi, Iraq (Aug. 11, 2005) - Lance Cpl. Steven R. Marines and Sailors with Camp Pendleton, Calif., -based 1st Battalion, 5th Marines mourned the loss of 21-year-old Strain, a machine gunner with Company B, who fell on Ramadi's urban battlefield Aug. 3 while fighting terror. Seeley and Strain served together and were best friends. Strain was from Smartsville, Calif., and leaves behind his parents, Rob and Karen Strain, and fiance, Barbara Ann Wyclef. Photo by: Cpl. CAMP HURRICANE POINT Ar Ramadi, Iraq (Aug. 9, 2005) - Lance Cpl. Jose O. Martinez, a machine gunner with 4th Platoon, Company W, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, narrowly escaped death June 11. The 22-year-old from El Paso, Texas was hit in the face, neck and the back of his head by shrapnel from an improvised explosive device while conducting a night mission with his Marine comrades. For his wounds, Martinez was awarded a Purple Heart during a ceremony here Aug. 2. Martinez is in Iraq a second time with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
