AR RAMADI, Iraq (May 8, 2005) -Sergeant Jade C. Hill, the squad leader of 3rd Squad, 2nd Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, checks an Iraqi man's identification while one of his fellow Marines looks through his closet during a search mission in the city here. The 21-year-old from Westminster, Md., and other warriors with the infantry battalion's Company's A, C and W conducted "Operation Weston," which was a three-hour cordon and search mission of a neighborhood. The purpose of the mission was to eradicate the area of insurgents and inform the people living there of the consequences for harboring terrorists. The Marines hit three improvised explosive devises and found one 155 mm shell. One Marine received minor shrapnel wounds, and no insurgents were captured. Photo by Cpl. Private First Class Augustin Melendez, a 22-year-old special intelligence communicator and administrator with 2d Radio Battalion, 2d Marine Division, stands guard outside of the division's combat operations center. The Roselle Park, N.J. native rotates between guarding the COC, where all 2d Marine Division missions are tracked, to handling insurgent detainees and even guarding the mess hall while Marines and other service members eat. Melendez is one of the Marines on the camp's security force, keeping an eye out for anything suspicious - day or night. Official U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Godfrey(left), assistant noncommissioned officer with 5th Civil Affairs Group, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, provides security at a house here while Maj. Benjamin B. Busch(center), 5th CAG's team leader and Ricky Wissam, a translator, speak to the mother of an Iraqi boy who has a server urinary tract infection. Godfrey, 21, of Mount Zion, Md., was conducting a routine CAG patrol through a neighborhood less than a week ago when he discovered the ailing child. Marines with 5th CAG coordinated for the boy to be taken to a local hospital to receive medical aid for his illness. CAMP SNAKE PIT Ar Ramadi, Iraq (May 3, 2005) -- Sergeant Seth D. Hickman, squad leader of 1st Squad, 2nd Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, looks for insurgents who're shooting at him and his fellow Marines here. The Mason City, Iowa, native celebrated part of his 24th birthday on the top of his Company C's command operations center building engaging insurgents with his weapon. Insurgents attacked the company's firm base with small arms fire a few minutes past 8 a.m. The warriors successfully defended their camp from the attack and fought of the terrorists. Photo by Cpl.
