CAMP HURRICANE POINT Ar Ramadi, Iraq (Aug. 9, 2005) - Lance Cpl. Jose O. Martinez, a machine gunner with 4th Platoon, Company W, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, narrowly escaped death June 11. The 22-year-old from El Paso, Texas was hit in the face, neck and the back of his head by shrapnel from an improvised explosive device while conducting a night mission with his Marine comrades. For his wounds, Martinez was awarded a Purple Heart during a ceremony here Aug. 2. Martinez is in Iraq a second time with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
