CAMP HURRICANE POINT Ar Ramadi, Iraq (Aug. 9, 2005) - Lance Cpl. Jose O. Martinez, a machine gunner with 4th Platoon, Company W, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, narrowly escaped death June 11. The 22-year-old from El Paso, Texas was hit in the face, neck and the back of his head by shrapnel from an improvised explosive device while conducting a night mission with his Marine comrades. For his wounds, Martinez was awarded a Purple Heart during a ceremony here Aug. 2. Martinez is in Iraq a second time with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. CAMP BAHARIA, Iraq - Staff Sgt. Kevin Norwood, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment's armory chief, inspects an M249 Squad Automatic Weapon here Aug. 9. Every week, the battalion's small arms and optics technicians troubleshoot, inspect and repair more than 100 rifles, machineguns and night-vision units that infantrymen use while they patrol the streets of Fallujah. - CAMP BAHARIA, Iraq - Staff Sgt. Cochran, a rifleman and team leader with the Combined Action Platoon(CAP), Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, briefs members of the Iraqi Security Forces at the camp here Aug. 8 prior to conducting a security and stabilization operation in the Al Anbar capital in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Twenty-one-year-old Cochran from Unionville, Va., and fellow CAP Marines train new members of the ISF and employ them on Ramadi's urban battlefield to help secure the city from terrorism. The Marines are letting the ISF carry more of the operational workload because their tactics are improving. Iraqi Security Forces are even leading their own foot patrols. Photo by: Cpl.
