Pfc. Brett K. Volona, an squad automatic-weapons gunner with 1st Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, observes the terrain before him, looking for any threat against him and his fellow Marines during Operation Street Sweeper II, here August 28-30, to rid the area of the insurgency and its deadly tools. There was another determined element involved in the operation: the local Iraqi Police, who also conducted mounted and dismounted patrols. These local men traveled up and down the roads and also searched markets and houses for people they recognized as wanted insurgents.
