Col. Mohamed Nashmi Winays, the battalion commander for 1st Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Iraqi Army Division, passes out a soccer ball to an Iraqi child during a children’s engagement here. The engagement was designed to reward children for good grades in school. The soldiers were handing out gifts to the local children and engaging the local populous. The soldiers inspected report cards and talked with the children before they were allowed to make their way in. Inside the school waited more soldiers who bore greater gifts: soccer balls, pumps, stuffed animals and other toys. Operations like this introduce the local populous to the presence of the IA and are key to defeating the terror and intimidation campaign that insurgents use.
