Col. John K. Love, commanding officer, Regimental Combat Team 8, addresses guests and Marines at the relief in place/transfer of authority ceremony Jan. 19 at Camp Ripper, Iraq, that marked the official beginning of RCT-8's tenure as the Coalition Forces authority in western al-Anbar province, Iraq. Col. Patrick J. Malay, commanding officer, Regimental Combat Team 5, based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif., guided his regiment through a successful year in the area of operations in which Love and RCT-8 will now operate, building on the nation-building efforts begun by earlier RCTs.
