An Afghan man receives winter coats for his children, and over-the-counter medicines from an Afghan National Army soldier after a health class provided to locals by the ANA here, Dec. 24. The medical outreach provided villagers with basic medical and hygiene information, but also served to identify people who could be community health workers. Community health workers would be the first tier in the hierarchy of health care, which Afghanistan’s government is trying to establish in Sangin. “These community health workers could decide who needs further care and who could be treated here,” said Lt. Cmdr. Patrick Hare, surgeon for 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. “Preventative medicine is much better than trying to treat a disease in its more advanced stages.”
