Major Christopher J. Murphy, supply officer for Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division reads the Congressional Gold Medal citation for retired Marine Sgt. Arthur Obee at the Obee family’s home in Wilmington, N.C., Aug. 18, 2012. Obee served in World War II and Korea as a rifleman during the peak of America’s struggle for civil rights, becoming one of America’s first African-American Marines in 1942 after completing basic training at Montford Point, N.C.
