Lieutenant Col. Joel F. Schmidt receives the unit’s colors, signifying the responsibilities of 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division falling to him as he takes charge as the battalion’s commander, Dec. 10, 2013. The passing of the guidon is the symbol of passing the responsibilities between commanders, as the outgoing officer passes it to the incoming commander.
