CAMP HURRICANE POINT, Ar Ramadi, Iraq (April 21, 2005) -Sergeant Miguel E. Mejia, retail store manager with Headquarters and Service Company, 2nd Force Service Support Group, 2nd Marine Division, stocks a shelf with tobacco products at the post exchange here prior to opening time. The 24-year-old Salinas, Puerto Rico native, runs the Warfighter Express Service Team, which provides exchange items for purchase, dispersing and postal services to warriors fighting on the frontlines of the urban battlefield. Each week, Mejia loads a 7-ton truck full of merchandise from the Camp Ramadi Exchange and visits Camps Snake Pit and HP where Marines with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines reside. Photo by Cpl. AR RAMADI, Iraq (April 26, 2005) - Staff Sgt. Ray A. Valdez, guide, 4th Platoon, Company A, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, kneels down and secures C-4 plosives on a pile of illegal weapons he and his Marines discovered buried on farmland on the southern outskirts of the city here. The 30-year-old from San Antonio, Texas and his fellow engineers found 15 AK-47s; 12 bolt action rifles; three RPK machine guns; three rocket propelled grenade launchers; 200 60 mm shells, 100 82 mm shells; 20 120 mm shells; 10 155 mm shells; 40 pounds of P-C4 explosives; 30 hand grenades and 50 52 mm high explosive anti-tank missiles during their mission that had them trudging through the fields for more than 16 hours. The blast masters destroyed the weapons caches with controlled detonations so insurgents can no longer use them against coalition forces. Photo by Cpl. Manuel Valle Jr., team leader, 2nd Squad, 1st Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, takes a knee in front of a warrior's memorial and pays his final respects for his fellow comrade, Cpl. Kelly M. Cannan, who fell on the battlefield here April 20. Marines with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, held a dual memorial ceremony in honor of Cannan, 21, of Lowville, N.Y., and Lance Cpl. Marty G. Mortenson, 22, of Flagstaff, Ariz. Both warriors were killed by the same improvised explosive device attack while traveling in a convoy. Hook, a rifleman and team leader with 2nd Squad, 3rd Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, shows a picture of a suspected terrorist to an Iraqi man and asks him if he knows him and, if so, where he might be found. The 26-year-old from Chelsea, Va., and his fellow 3rd Platoon warriors cordoned off a two-block radius of Company A's area of operations and conducted a detailed search of its buildings and residents. The Marines didn't encounter any insurgents or threats during their three-hour-mission and returned safely to their firm base at Camp Hurricane Point without incident. Photo by Cpl.
