Cpl. Jesse Raper, a rifleman with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, shared a hug with Donna Ouellette, the mother of his fallen squad leader, Cpl. Michael W. Ouellette, moments after she was presented with her son’s Navy Cross in ceremony Nov. 10, 2010. Ouellette died during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, March 22, 2009. For his extraordinary heroic actions during a firefight that stemmed from an ambush in the Now Zad district of Helmand province, Ouellette was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross, the second highest award for valor next to the Medal of Honor.
