First Lt. Joseph M. Russell, a Richmond Heights, Ohio, native and the adviser for the Afghan National Army’s 215th Corps communications officer, worked through the 215th Corps’ supply system to obtain encrypted circuit boards for the ANA’s field radios, giving the soldiers secure communications for their operations. The 25-year-old said he joined the Marine Corps post 9/11 after watching the terrorists on television as a teenager. He decided to apply for officer candidacy when he was attending college and going to weekend drills in the Marine Corps Reserve.
