Commanding Officer, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion

Lieutenant Colonel Hoey began his military career enlisting in the United States Navy in January 1999.  Following completion of Recruit Training, Operations Specialist “A” School and other follow on training he served as an Operations and Security Specialist stationed aboard Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, Greece for one year and achieved the rank of Third Class Petty Officer.  He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 2001 following an inter-service transfer and completion of Officer Candidate School (OCS).  After OCS he went on to complete The Basic School, Infantry Officer Course, Scout Sniper Platoon Commanders Course, and Ground Intelligence Officer Course.  In his first assignments he was stationed at Twentynine Palms and Camp Pendleton, California where he served as the Battalion Intelligence Officer for 3d Battalion, 11th Marines, Scout-Sniper Platoon Commander for 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, and Reconnaissance Platoon Commander at 1st Reconnaissance Battalion.  During these assignments he deployed and executed the invasion of Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from January to July 2003 and subsequently returned to Iraq for follow on tours in support of Counterinsurgency operations as the Scout Sniper Platoon Commander and Reconnaissance Platoon Commander.

Then a Captain, he left California in January 2008 to attend the MAGTF Intelligence Officers Course in route to his next duty assignment with the National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA/CSS).  During his time with the NSA/CSS he completed several operational deployments to Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, and other areas around the globe conducting and supervising national intelligence collection operations in support of the Global War on Terror.

Following his assignment with the NSA/CSS he was assessed and selected for a position within the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) where he served as an Operations and Intelligence Officer in support of global counter-terrorism operations from July 2011 to July 2014.

In July 2014 he reported to 3d Marine Raider Support Battalion, Marine Corps Specials Operations Command (MARSOC) at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to serve as the Executive Officer managing internal material readiness procedures, manpower alignments, and daily staff functions for the Battalion.  After serving as Executive Officer he transitioned to the Marine Raider Support Group (MRSG) and served as the MRSG Intelligence Officer and principle advisor to the Commanding Officer for all Intelligence initiatives, policies, and directives.  In addition, while serving with the MRSG, he was selected to deploy to Iraq as the J-2 for a Joint Task Force in support of Operation Inherent Resolve during U.S. Forces Iraq efforts to defeat and expel ISIS from its territories. 

After his tour with MARSOC he was transferred to the Intelligence Department, Headquarters Marine Corps where he served as the Occupational Field Manager managing manpower and training initiatives for the Marine Corps Intelligence Enterprise.  While serving at the Department he was selected for Battalion Command.  He was then reassigned to 2d Marine Division in July 2018 where he served as the 2d Marine Division G-3 Current Operations Officer while awaiting his assumption of command.
