MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (Sept. 8, 2007) -- Lt. Col. Thad R. Trapp (left) and Sgt. Maj. Jose L. Santiago pose with a car hood given to 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, at the battalion?s family day at Onslow Beach Sept. 8. Pfc. Andrew D. Bear, a team leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 6, pauses for a moment to inspect a weapons cache that he discovered, Aug. 23. The weapons cache was hidden just below the surface of an Iraqi field and contained more than 350 37mm anti-aircraft rounds. The rounds, if not found, could have been used by insurgents to make an IED. The large field the cache was found in was shown to the Marines by the local Iraqi Police, who also helped search alongside the Marines. - Pfc. Andrew D. Pauluchuk, a team leader with 1st Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, checks the Marines behind him to make sure the patrol is moving along safely during Operation Street Sweeper II, here August 28-30, to rid the area of the insurgency and its deadly tools. There was another determined element involved in the operation: the local Iraqi Police, who also conducted mounted and dismounted patrols. These local men traveled up and down the roads and also searched markets and houses for people they recognized as wanted insurgents. - Cpl. Brian L. Marines from 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division are working with the Iraqi soldiers to train them in close quarters combat skills. 2d Brigade, 7th Division is with Multi National Forces-West in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Al Anbar province of Iraq to develop Iraqi Security Forces, facilitate the development of official rule of law through democratic reforms, and continue the development of a market based economy centered on Iraqi reconstruction.
