Veterans of the Battle of Tarawa and family members gathered Nov. 20 to view a non-lethal weapons demonstration in celebration of Tarawa Day. “Tarawa Day is a day to honor the veterans who fought in the battle of Tarawa,” said Navy Cmdr. Bill M. Appleton, a native of Pittsburgh and chaplain for the 2nd Marine Regiment. “It’s also very special because it fell on the 65th anniversary of the beginning of the battle, which was fought from Nov. 20, 1943 to Nov. 23, 1943.” (Official U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl.
