William Wheeler, a former Army staff sergeant, stands with his son, Capt. Chase B. Wheeler, executive officer, company C, 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., Oct. 3. Wheeler received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained from an approximately 120-pound improvised explosive device in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The medal was given in conjunction with Wheeler’s promotion to captain.
